The show is over. The show must go on.
Miami is finally done and dusted and what a show it was! With over 2 million viewers and 200k+ attendees, there is something for everyone, and I mean, everyone, even those who may not be that interested in motorsports!
There are 3 highlights of notes for me:
Spectacles trump a track with issues.
With all the celebrities and hype, much seems to be forgiven in the eyes of viewers and bandwagon fans. While the complaint lists were quite real from the tarmac, safety concerns of concrete walls instead of Tecpro barriers, pitlane adjustments to course layout issues. All these issues from drivers seem to be overshadowed by the non-racing spectacles, and the question is, is this what Liberty planned all along? And is this what the future of F1 will become, an unapologetic racing entertainment of the 22nd-century for the popular culture? If so, what kind of drivers will this spectacle endorse? If entertainment values trump skills and talents, will the next next batch of drivers be those with unhinged or polarizing characters? Like those of WWE?Max & Charles’s driver score [Column I] tells us this will be a tight title battle this year. There is a 0.18 difference between these two drivers, and even though Max has a champion under his belt and more wins, their historical stats tell us their forms may be closer to each other than expected. Given similar car performances, which they are at the moment, this could be an epic battle to the end.
The 6th fastest lap belongs to Mick Schumacher. Huh?
Yup, faster than Lewis in Miami is Mick! Yet, both HAAS finished 15th and 16th. Unlike other sophomores or even rookies, there is not much going on with his numbers. Even Zhou Guanyu has more data points than him! While Mick carries a marketable brand and extraordinary shoes to fill, he needs to translate his fast lap times into something worth watching. It’s not just the results he needs, but noteworthy fights with others to make him stand out, ‘cause eventually, your name will run out of credits.
Spain is next and I think for many die-hard fans, this is a sign of relief, and I am sure Martin Brundle is absolutely elated to be back in a more normal grid walk next race. Yes, it was cringeworthy to watch the grid walk in Miami. Please, don’t make him do that again.
