F1 Emilia Romagna GP 2022 Post-Race Report
It could've been red all over, but instead, it was the blues.
What a heartbreaking race for both Ferrari drivers! Coming into Imola as the favourite, there was a lot of expectations for the whole team, and so it may be a surprise that both drivers missed out on the podium. Or was it really a surprise?
The truth is, winning a home GP is not an easy feat. The pressure is high, and the home country media, especially Italy, will be hyped up to the 11th degree. On top of that, for Carlos, there must be a lot of pressure to break away from the imminent second driver label, especially now that he has extended his contract. This latest DNF is not going to make him feel any more comfortable about his position at Ferrari (even though it was not his fault!).
As for Leclerc, should he have pushed so hard? I think as a driver at your team’s home race, you want to make your team proud and push it a tad more for that extra margin. I don’t think he should regret his drive as I believe he did exactly what Ferrari would have wanted: Make it the best show possible at home. It is unfortunate it didn’t pan out the way he would’ve wanted.
Some of the highlights of the race would be the mature drive of Yuki. He is punching above his weight atm and Alpha Tauri should be very happy with his performance! Another highlight? Latifi did not crash! This is beyond my imagination, and Williams should accept it like a victory!
On the negative end, what happened to Ricciardo? He is way off from where he should be even after that incident with Sainz. Maybe he felt really conflicted or really bad for the rest of the race… or maybe he was worried about all the Ferrari fans who will be hunting him down after the race?!
